Preserving a National River Heritage
The Whitewater Heritage Initiative is an emerging national effort to preserve the people, stories, artifacts, traditions, and lessons that shaped American whitewater. It is being developed to document this history, make it more accessible, and ensure that important knowledge is not lost as memories fade and private collections become harder to locate.
The initiative also looks forward. By connecting preservation with education, leadership, conservation, research, and community engagement, it aims to become a resource for river professionals, guides, outfitters, students, and emerging leaders to learn from the industry’s past, exchange knowledge, and help shape its future.
To establish the enduring home of American whitewater heritage, where history is preserved, people are connected, leaders are developed, rivers are stewarded, and future generations are inspired through collaboration, education, and conservation.

A Vision Taking Shape
The Whitewater Heritage Initiative is currently in its founding and organizational phase. The initial vision has been developed, and work is beginning to build the leadership, partnerships, governance, and structure needed to carry it forward responsibly.
Current priorities include assembling a founding steering committee and advisory network, identifying strategic partners, locating important stories and collections, shaping the first Whitewater Heritage Summit, and exploring the most appropriate nonprofit structure.
The initiative’s programs, partnerships, and proposed Center for Whitewater Heritage and Leadership are still in development. This early stage creates an important opportunity for experienced voices from across the whitewater, preservation, education, conservation, and river-community fields to help shape what comes next.
